TOKYO — Some 28% of software in Japan was illegally copied in 2004, down 1 percentage point from the previous year and the world's eighth lowest level, according to a survey released Wednesday by the Business Software Alliance, a U.S. organization promoting a safe and legal digital world.
The survey showed that the rate of illegally copied software across the world fell 1 point to 35%, resulting in damage of $32.70 billion. By country, Vietnam ranked top in terms of the rate of illegal software copying with 92% of software installed in computers in the country last year illegally copied. In contrast, the United States had the lowest rate at 21%. (Kyodo News)
A bit frightening to see the damages piracy causes.

Yeeeah. It happens everywhere. They have CD rental stores all over Iwate, I know for sure. You just rent a lot of CD's and then go back home and burn them, then bring them back when they're due and rent more. CD rental was pretty popular in Hanamaki. You're still paying for music, but not the full price. Maybe only 4 dollars or so.

Ok, it is pretty bad for everyone who played a part in producing the cd, but it's better than downloading because the original cds had to be purchased from somewhere (I do take it that since it's a whole business they have more than one copy of an original cd) .
