As some of you may know, currently Japan is celebrating Golden Week. Golden Week is a week where there are 4 national holidays. Beacause of weekends, inbetween holidays, and businesses that may close a day before and after Golden Week, celebration could last up to 7-10 days. This makes Golden Week one of Japan's 3 busiest holiday seasons alongside New Year's and Obon Week. The first holiday is Greenery day or Midori no Hi which was on April 29th of April of this year. The 29th was the birthday of Emperor Showa who died in 1989. After his death, his dying day was declared this national holiday because he loved nature. In 2007, Midori no Hi will be moved to May 4th and it's former position among the holidays will be filled by Showa Day. The second holiday is Constitution Day on May 3rd which is when in 1947, Japan's post WWII constitution started. The third holiday on May 5th is Children's Day or Kodomo no Hi when Tango no Sekku or the Boy's Festival is held. The origin of this holiday is unclear because different legends claim to be the start. You can find out more about Tango no Sekku hereAs I mentioned before there are inbetween holidays such as Between Day, Kokumin no kyujitsu, on May 4th of this year. According to Japanese law, any day which is inbetween 2 national holidays is declared a holiday unless it's a Sunday. Happy Golden Week everyone!
