71% of parents for English in elementary school; 54% of teachers against it
TOKYO — Seventy-one percent of parents welcome the planned introduction of compulsory English classes at the elementary school level, while 54% of teachers are against it, results of an education ministry survey showed Friday.
Teachers seem concerned over a possible increase in their workload and put priority on teaching Japanese and other subjects, the survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology indicated. The survey was conducted in June last year, covering 230 elementary schools nationwide. About 9,600 parents whose children are in the fourth and sixth grades, and 2,200 teachers responded.
The teachers don't want to because it's not convenient enough for them.
