Gangsters arrested for targeting wrong man with ice pick
FUKUOKA -- Two members of a gang associated with a crime group have been arrested on suspicion of trying to kill a man they mistakenly attacked with an ice pick-shaped weapon, police said.
The suspects, Masahiko Otsuka, 21, and Ken Nakasuji, 28, were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for attacking the man, whom they mistakenly thought was a former gang member, or one of the member's associates.
The 27-year-old worker, whose name has been withheld, was left with serious injuries after the attack.
Investigators said the two gangsters were chasing a former gang member over money trouble but mistakenly targeted the worker. At about 7 a.m. on June 2 last year, they burst into the man's apartment in Kitakyushu and stabbed him in the chest and stomach with an ice pick-shaped weapon, police said.
The worker frantically told them that they had the wrong man, and when they found out his name and place of work, they realized they had targeted the wrong person, so they apologized and warned him not to tell police, investigators said.
"Sorry for the mistake. You were about to die. If you tell the police about this we'll kill you," one of the gangsters reportedly told the man.
At the time of the incident, the two gangsters had been after a former ganger member over an incident involving several million yen. The worker they attacked was about the same age and height of the former gang member, police said.
Nakasuji has already been charged with violating the swords and firearms control law, while Otsuka has been indicted for blackmail.
