M7 quake hits western Japan, killing one, injuring 400
TOKYO — A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7 struck northern Kyushu on Sunday morning, leaving a woman dead and more than 400 people injured in Fukuoka Prefecture. The 10:53 a.m. quake, which registered a maximum intensity of lower 6 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Fukuoka city and southern Saga Prefecture, also damaged many houses and paralyzed railway services and utilities.
In Fukuoka, a 75-year-old woman who was trapped underneath a collapsed wall in the quake died after being taken to a hospital, city officials said. About 400 people have received treatment for injuries at hospitals in the city, according to a Kyodo News tally.
