Pirates demanded $250,000 ransom, gave crew $600 at release
BUTTERWORTH, Malaysia — Pirates who abducted three crew members of a Japanese tugboat in the Malacca Strait last week demanded a $250,000 ransom two days later from the shipping company that owned the boat, but the company asked that it be reduced to $100,000, sources familiar with the case said Tuesday.
It is unknown at what amount the deal was struck and whether the ransom was actually paid, but separate sources at the shipping company Kondo Kaiji Co said the pirates gave the three crew members cash worth $200 each Saturday before releasing them and told them to use the money when necessary. I've been following this story for a few days, but didn't feel the urge to post it until now. Those are some pretty cool pirates.
