Anyone ever heard of this series by Terry Pratchett? I went out to the bookstore this week (which was crawling with people looking for leftover Harry Potter copies) and the clerk recommended the series to me. I heard that the series was supposed to be funny, but now that seems like an understatement.
Anyways, the book in the series that I got is called Thief of Time. It's about a clockmaker who's hired to make a perfectly accurate clock based on the universal tick (the smallest measure of time possible, and the time it takes for now to become then). The problem is, once perfect accuracy is achieved, time completely stops. So there are several figures who are out to stop the clockmaker, including the granddaughter of Death (Death has no emotions so he doesn't really seem to give a damn), and two History Monks.
The book's only 378 pages, so it's a quick read, but it's also really interesting and pretty hilarious.
