Ok, since I'm usually 10 mother friggin steps ahead of you people in the world of J-music (like w/ Nami + Orange Range) here are some fresh new artists that I've been checking out.
Sayaka
Sounds like: Yuki + Ayaya + DAI
Sayaka's actually been around for quite a good while now (2002), but hasn't been too popular until late 2004, starting with her song "Garden". She has a really nice cute high pitched voice (which isn't really annoying at all) and her style is mellow soft rock.
Song to check out: Jougen no Tsuki
Kaela Kimura
Sounds like: Zone + Puffy
I really love Kaela she's going to have a good year in '05. She's only been out a few monthes. Kaela has a really nice, warm, soothing, soulful voice and her music is a happy soft rock. I'm just going to end it here since I could go on praising her with 1000 more words.
Songs to check out: happiness!!!
Nobodyknows+
Sounds like: Flow + M-flo + Early Hikki
Okay their name surely describes their style NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THE HELL IT IS!!! It sounds good though. Sometimes they're traditional hip hop, sometimes pop hip hop, sometimes a punk hh. They've been around since late 2003 and have had been on the oricon numerous times.
Songs to check out: Um, any, but make sure to check out more than one since their songs can be so different from each other.
I Wish
Sounds like: Anime endings
I Wish is a 2 person pop group that's been around since late 2003 They do very soft easy listening pop with a rock influence which really isn't in lately, but they've recieved quite a fair bit of sucess. Their music is probably the best to listen to when you just want to relax.
Songs to check out: Ashita he no Tobira
Home Made
Sounds like: Chemistry + Orange Range or Dragon Ash?
These 3 MCs are fairly new to the music industry. First making their presence known in May of '04. Their music is really cool like a jazzy R&B. Their vocals are quite good, but it's hard to find anything to compare them to. They've got the different pitches like Orange Range which sounds like Dragon Ash, but they're not like either because they're not rock influenced and they don't carry nearly as much energy as either. You'll just have to check them out to see what I'm talking about.
Songs to check out: Sankyuu!!, Summer Time Magic
Rie Fu
Sounds like: Daisuke Kawaguchi + Olivia + Michelle Branch + Vanessa Carlton
Check out the Multimedia Section
Nana Kitade
Sounds like: Nanase Aikawa + BuriGuri + Laruku?
This is a new artist ^.^ who's quite hot. Her voice is quite different and she has an unusual way of singing that may or may not appeal to you. Her music is sorta pop + poprock + alternative rock. It's quite different, but I like it.
Songs to check out: Kesenai Tsumi, Nanairo
r.o.r/s
Sounds like: Masami Okui + Chihiro Yonekura
r.o.r/s (reflection or renaissance/sounds) is a pop group that sounds like Masami and Chihiro because that's who r.o.r/s is!!! Just as expected they're pop + dance. If you're a fan of either check them out.
songs to check out: Cry Max, Tattoo Kiss, Candy Lie
Kou Shibasaki
Sounds like: Mika Nakashima
Kou is quite famous in Japan. She's a very popular tv and movie actress. You might have even heard of her (she was in Battle Royale and Tokyo Raiders). She's also been a musical artist I think since 2000. Nothing really sets her apart from other pop artists, but she isn't bad, so still worth a listen,
Songs to chek out: Glitter (check the Multimedia section later)
Dong Bang Shin Ki
Sounds like: Shinhwa
I love DBSK (especially Hero/Young who belongs to me!), they're like a new Shinhwa. I discovered them a few monthes ago thanks to Revolution. Their talent is incredible and shines even when singing acapella (which not a lot of stars nowadays can). This year the group was even 1 of 10 Bonsang recipients.
Check out: Tri-Angle (in the multimedia section), My Little Princess (Acapella)
The Babystars
Sounds like: Janna Da Arc? Hitomi Yaida? Laruku?
I can't really think of a band that The Babystars compares to right now. They're the average set up of a band, 4 guys, vocals, drums, guitar, bass. Their music is usually a very nice heartfelt rock, but not as soft as soft rock or pop rock. It's hard to describe them since their music is influenced by different things (to understand what I mean listen to "Hikari e" then "Young Young Young"). I first heard of them because of Popjapantv, but you too might have heard of them, but didn't realize it because their song "Hikari e" is featured in the anime "One Piece".
Checkout : Hikari e, My Stride, SUNDAY
little by little
Sounds like: Whiteberry, Judy and Mary
lbl isn't really a band, but rather the product of the voice Hideco and mind Tetsuhiko. I'm a bit too lazy to give you more info right now although I could sing praises for the rest of the day. lbl is a great choice for people who like their rock a bit easy on the ears with a really good chick singer.
Check out: Kanashimi wo Yasashisa ni (an opening for Naruto), Ameagari no Kyuu na Sakamichi
The Trax
Sounds like: X-Japan, D'espairsRay, Dir en Grey, Nightmare
This band rocks hard! The Trax is a Korean rock band (and the only on SM TOWN's label). The band can do ballads just as well as they can do their metal like X-Japan whom they actually covered in Korean and Japanese. This band is one I first discovered in their collaboration with BoA and Dong Bang Shin Ki in Triangle. They've totally hooked me and I hope to expect more from them in the future.
Check out: Beat Traitor, Tears, Scorpio
HAV
Sounds like: Flow, Kemuri, Buzzlip
When I first heard their song 'You Gonna Feel', I thought they were a rock/rap band, but it seems to not be the case. From what I've heard, they're rock/rap/punk/ska. It is a bit unusual, but they're songs no matter what genre are very fun and quite catchy. I'm having a bit of trouble finding info on the band, so more to come on them later.
Check out: One Way DRIVE, You Gonna Feel, Hey Jimmy
