NAGOYA — A 34-year-old man armed with a knife stabbed two children at a supermarket in Anjo, Aichi Prefecture, on Friday morning, killing an 11-month-old boy and injuring his 3-year-old sister, police said.
The suspect, identified as Katsunao Ujiie, 34, reportedly unemployed and of no fixed abode, fled the scene but was arrested on a street about an hour and a half later. The police quoted the man as saying, "I thought of killing them. I was feeling increasingly irritated for several days." They added that the man was also making statements like "I heard noises directed to myself, telling me to kill myself."
The police said that the man's remarks were consistent and that he should take criminal responsibility for the suspected crime.
It is believed Ujiie and his victims were not acquainted.
The 11-month-old boy, Shoma Aoyama, was stabbed in the head with a knife and was pronounced dead at a hospital in the early afternoon, the police said.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. in a play area in the children's clothing section on the second floor of Ito-Yokado Co.'s outlet in Anjo's Sumiyoshi district. A woman in her 20s was punched in the face by the suspect and injured, the police said.
Ujiie, his clothes stained with blood, was arrested on a street about 1.2 kilometers from the crime scene and charged with murder.
According to investigators, the boy and his sister visited the supermarket with their mother and were assaulted while separated from her.
The woman who was punched happened to be at the scene when Ujiie attacked the children, the police said. The weapon was a small stainless steel kitchen knife, which Ujiie said he "took" from the store, they said.
A salesclerk in the toy and stationery section witnessed the incident and called an operator to request an ambulance, according to supermarket manager Yasunori Senzaki.
Ujiie appeared to have fled immediately via stairs on the south side of the store. Shop clerks attempted to chase him but lost sight of him, the manager said.
According to an investigative source, the suspect had just been released from a prison in Toyohashi city in the same prefecture in late January after serving time for a crime that the source declined to specify.
He had been looking for a job in Nagoya while living in a dumped car and had been in Anjo for the last few days, the source said, adding he had no money at the time of arrest.
The police said they found the raincoat he was wearing at the time of the stabbing abandoned and stained with blood.
