Tokyo tackles train gropers with more women-only carriages
East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) will run more women-only carriages on the Saikyo Line connecting Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture, a move set to combat a massive number of train gropers.
With 217 cases of molestation reported on the Saikyo Line in 2004, the worst among Tokyo's railways, JR East has decided to run women-only carriages in morning rush hours as well as at night.
Officials of the company said on Wednesday that the front carriage of 35 trains departing and arriving at JR Shinjuku Station between 7:30 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. on weekdays will be designated as women-only starting from April 4.
"We may consider having women-only carriages on other lines after studying passenger conditions on the Saikyo Line," a JR East official said.
Other major railways are reportedly planning to begin women-only carriages during morning rush hours.
