Namie Amuro donates Y10 million to child victims in Sumatra
TOKYO — Singer Namie Amuro has donated 10 million yen to UNICEF to be given to child victims of the Dec 26 earthquake and tsunami in Sumatra, entertainment media reported Friday.
Amuro made the donation after performing at the charity event "MTV Asia Aid" held in Bangkok last month. "I hope that by bringing attention to the reality of the disaster, many more people will think about what they can do for those children who still live in Sumatra," said Amuro.
The 10 million yen donation is not the first time the 27-year-old singer has helped charities. Five years ago, Amuro donated part of the proceeds from the sales of her CD "Never End" to UNICEF. Last year, she donated 5 million yen to the Taiwan Child Support Foundation and 5,000 won to the Korea Council of Social Welfare, 1,000 won of which went to help child victims of a deadly train blast in North Korea.
That's really cool. Not a lot of Japanese celebrities are that generous.
