Appeal filed over wage discrimination against foreign teachers
OSAKA — A teachers' union filed an appeal with a local labor board Wednesday against the Amagasaki city government in Hyogo Prefecture that is cutting the wages of 11 foreign teaching assistants for English classes in public schools while raising wages for other employees of the city government.
The foreign teachers from Canada and other countries working in schools in Amagasaki formed a local chapter of the Osaka-based Education Workers and Amalgamated Union in December 2002. The city told the union that their annual wages of about 6 million yen would be cut by 15% in 2003, citing financial difficulties, the appeal said. But the city effectively raised the wages of other employees by about 1% in fiscal 2004, it said. (Kyodo News)
I actually think the teachers should suck it up. They aren't qualified teachers and they're making 6,000,000 yen a year. That's better than what they'd probably be making back home.
