FUKUSHIMA — Parents of a 17-year-old high school student who drowned during a swimming class filed a damages suit Wednesday to seek about 59 million yen in compensation from the Fukushima prefectural government, arguing that the school failed to take adequate safety measures.
The student of the prefectural government-run Ishikawa High School died on Sept 6, 2002, after going below the surface of the school's outdoor pool, according to the suit filed with the Fukushima District Court's Shirakawa branch. The plaintiffs say that the teacher did not fully explain the risks involved in holding one's breath underwater, and failed to supervise the students properly. (Kyodo News)
I think it's wrong for the parents to sue for money. Things like that really don't sit well with me. This is interesting though because they make a point of suing over a 17 year-old not knowing the risks of holding their breath under water. ISN'T IT COMMON SENSE? The whole supervision thing is however solid.
